Digital Ruptures

Silvia Dal Dosso, video-maker and researcher on  artificial intelligence, speaks about digital breaches and the over-turning of power relations in the use of technology. Silvia is currently developing a new video-project on marginality within the framework of Transnational Dialogues.

This presentation was part of the round-table “Marginal Notes: Where the next rupture will be” with the participation of Silvia Dal Dosso, Luigi Galimberti, Jota Mombaça and Marco Baravalle, which took place within the framework of the event “Brecha Democrática”, Venice, 10-11 October 2015. L’Europa assume i caratteri di un Impero dal punto di vista geografico e politico: al centro di decisione e comando si oppongono le periferie degli Stati membri del sud del continente... Come per ogni Impero, alle singole contee viene rilasciato un margine di autonomia: agli Stati membri si lascia la traduzione delle disposizioni governamentali all’interno dei propri ordinamenti giuridici, il controllo delle frontiere ed il monopolio della forza...

Così alcuni passaggi dell’intervento di Fabio Mengali, attivista di Padova dei Centri Sociali del Nord-Est, nel quale egli ha tentato di dare un quadro del contemporaneo assetto della governance europea e di definire delle linee guida per la pratica della breccia democratica oggi. Giuseppe Cocco parla del Brasile e delle sue ingiustizie a partire dalle proteste del giugno 2013, forse la più grande mobilitazione di massa della storia del Brasile, e la cui onda lunga si avverte ancora oggi nell’uscita dalle forme di rappresentazione – dal sindacato al partito –  che non rappresentano più le richieste di gran parte del popolo brasiliano e nella creazione di nuove forme di lotta e di vita in ambito urbano.

MP5 is an Italian artist known for her incisive black and white drawings, illustrations, mural works and video animations. She designed posters for political demonstrations, concerts, theater festivals and she worked on public murals across Europe. Her works span across history, politics and civil rights.

Jota Mombaça, a performance artist, writer and researcher from Natal, talks about the erased memory of colonised bodies and minds that make up Brazil. The presentation is accompanied by images of his performance “The Colonial Wound Still Hurts”. Luigi Galimberti, the interviewer, is coordinator of Transnational Dialogues.

Presentation and selection of video-material from Brazil by Luiz Camillo Osorio, curator of the Brazilian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, which bore the title “É tanta coisa que nem cabe aqui” (“It is so much that does not fit here”). The reference is, among others, to the richness and depth of the aesthetic of the Brazilian protests in June 2013.

IT IS SO MUCH THAT IT DOES NOT FIT IN HERE: That is the sentence written in one of a multitude of posters that were occupying the streets during the mass protests of June 2013 in Brazil. The Brazilian insurgence, the Spanish 15-M and the resistances in the margins of Europe and the world do not fit in an exhibition, but the Brazilian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale has opened itself to the multitudes and has allowed the power of these multitudes to break through it. Phenomena of social exclusion and marginality manifest themselves more and more in how the urban environment is built and regulated. This long tradition of architecturally engineered segregation, from the Venetian ghettos to Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, is well alive and has been growing around the world according to the particularities of the local context, albeit having its unmistakable matrix in the flows of global capital. However, clusters of resistance to the model of the alienating global city are widespread. These groups of resistance elaborate models and produce tools for taking back the city to its inhabitants and reclaiming its ownership. THIS APPLICATION IS NOW CLOSED.

In 2015 and 2016, Transnational Dialogues will specifically research about the topic of marginality, seen from the duplex perspective of those who find themselves in and struggle to come out of it, and those who expressly look for it in order to escape from an unsatisfying mainstream condition of which they do not share the values. Among the different outputs, we intend to produce a video that reflects on the proposed theme.
